Deadpool actor Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff lead a heartwarming new rom-com, A Nice Indian Boy.

Director Roshan Sethi’s film features “comic misunderstandings, frank fights and emotional revelations,” according to a synopsis.

PEOPLE is exclusively debuting the first trailer, centered on the blossoming relationship between Groff’s Jay and Soni’s Naveen.

“My parents are super liberal,” Naveen explains to Jay in the trailer of his mom Megha (Zarna Garg) and dad Archit (Harish Patel). “Just don’t bring up drinking or sex. And no displays of physical affection.”

Complications ensue when Jay, a White man adopted and raised by Indian parents, finally meets his boyfriend’s Indian parents — who didn’t know about the adopted part. “We think it’s wonderful that you’re White,” deadpans Megha upon meeting Jay.

Playing Naveen’s “seemingly perfect” sister is Sunita Mani. “The Gavaskars are outwardly accepting of Naveen’s sexuality but have never had to confront it in practice,” explains the synopsis. Naveen ends up “caught between who he is with his family and who he is outside of it.”

Adapted by Eric Randall based on Madhuri Shekar’s play of the same name, and executive produced by Mindy KalingJustin Baldoni and more, A Nice Indian Boy premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and screened at BFI London Film Festival in 2024.

Per Variety, Sethi cast his off-screen partner Soni in the film after signing on. “It was probably the most personal thing we’ll get to make,” Soni, 36, told the outlet in October.

“I, immediately from the first take of the first scene, couldn’t believe how familiar it all felt,” Groff, 39, said at the time, admitting he wasn’t familiar with the Bollywood movies that inform the project. “Even though there was a stark difference in culture, it was so heartwarming to see that families are families, no matter what culture you’re in.”

Soni also stars in the upcoming thriller Fade to Black. Fresh off his Tony Award win for Merrily We Roll Along, Groff is back on Broadway as Bobby Darin in Just in Time (opening April 23 at Circle in the Square Theatre).

A Nice Indian Boy is in theaters April 4.
